Ant and Dec have appeared on all their projects together since they started working in the entertainment industry 20 years ago.
Yet following the incident that saw Ant crash his black Mini in West London after walking his dog with his mother on Sunday, the presenter announced he would be returning to a rehabilitation centre with reports adding he could be out for the “rest of the year”.
As a result, not only has Dec had to make the decision with ITV to host the remainder of Saturday Night Takeaway alone but fans are anxiously wondering what this will mean for the pair’s other hugely popular television show.
While Ant had joined him in Australia for the last series of I’m A Celeb, Declan Donnelly made a lighthearted joke about This Morning host Holly Willoughby doing it if he’d stayed in rehab instead.
Dec teased: ”Welcome to Australia, we are back, and we’re here for the next three weeks.
“Your hosts with the most, me and the gorgeous Holly Willoughby….”
Ant and Dec laughed and the former promised he never would have left his best friend to helm the gig alone, but viewers are now insisting Holly could step up to be by Dec’s side for real.
Fans took to Twitter to share their feelings on the potential shakeup.
One person wrote: ”Being a huge Ant and Dec fan I have found the last few days upsetting. I hope that Ant gets the help he so needs and Dec gets the support that he needs without his best friend by his side.
“Holly Willoughby would be the perfect candidate to present the show with him.”
“Hoping Ant is feeling the love and best wishes from us all. I do reckon Holly Willoughby would be a fab co-host contender!” another viewer said.
While a third speculated: ”Stephen [Mulhern] would seem like the obvious choice… but the I’m a Celeb rumours were Holly Willloughby… Could we see that finally materialise?”
Fans had wondered at the time if the popular NTA award winners would even reference Ant’s time away from the spotlight as he dealt with his addiction to prescription medication.
But after Dec mentioned Holly, it quickly became apparent that the hosts were stronger than ever.
As Ant was indignant with mock shock, Dec said: “They must have put the wrong script in,” before adding: “Nobody was sure if you would make it or not.”
Ant replied: “Unbelievable! I was always going to make it, come on, I’m back my friend! Come on!”
I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! is expected to return in December.
