CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A local woman is warning others after she claims a local travel agency schemed her out of thousands of dollars.
Sand Dollar Travel is a travel agency based out of Clifton Park. It was rated a five-star service on the internet, but the business recently closed and several of its customer said the owner allegedly took thousands of dollars from their bank accounts.
Julie Kinley took a trip to Aruba in April. The cruise cost her over $1,200. When she returned, she noticed something different.
“I saw that $2,500 had been taken out, and I wasn’t sure why,” she said. “And I looked a few days later, there was $3,500 taken out.
Kinley contacted Sand Dollar Travel owner Anna Marie Rotolo, who was not able to provide an explanation as to why additional money was taken out. She did write Kinley a check, but the check bounced.
“Well, I was upset because I was a little bit afraid that maybe it would bounce,” Kinley said.
Frustrated and confused, Kinley contacted Rotolo for a second time. The owner agreed to meet at the agency, but when Kinley arrived, no one was there.
Kinley called her bank and filed a police report.
“A couple is in Mexico, and they don’t have a flight back because Anna Marie didn’t pay for the flight,” Kinley claimed.
NEWS10 ABC reached out to Rotolo, but the phone call when straight to her voicemail box, which was full.
“Anybody that’s involved with Sand Dollar, I would definitely check your accounts, and maybe cancel any credit cards and notify the police, definitely,” Kinley warned.
New York State Police said it’s in the process of interviewing different victims. Officers said no arrests will be made until a case is officially made.
