Ex-Oregon State star Brandon Browner charged with attempted murder

Former Oregon State star Brandon Browner was charged with attempted murder Tuesday after he was arrested following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted his former girlfriend.

Browner, who also played for the Seattle Seahawks, was indicted on four felony charges by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. Browner was charged with attempted murder, robbery, burglary and false imprisonment. Browner, 33, was also charged with two misdemeanor counts of child endangerment.

Police officers responded to a call from a home in La Verne, Calif., Sunday morning after a caller reported a man was attempting to break into the home through a locked window. Browner allegedly assaulted the woman – a former girlfriend who had a restraining order against Browner. Browner forced her back into the house, physically harmed her and threatened to kill her, according to La Verne police.

Prosecutors also said he tried to smother the woman in a carpet.

Browner also was accused of stealing a Rolex watch – valued at approximately $20,000 – from the victim before fleeing the scene. Police located Browner within hours of the incident and he was taken into custody without incident. Browner’s bail was set at $10 million.

The latest incident continues a series of run-ins with the law by Browner. Browner has now been arrested at least four times during the past 12 months.

He was arrested in May for domestic violence and child endangerment.  He was arrested for making criminal threats in September and also arrested on drug charges in October.

Browner played with the Seahawks from 2011 to 2013, and was a member of the Seahawks team that won Super Bowl 48 in 2014. Browner signed with the New England Patriots in 2014 and won a championship in 2015, when the Patriots defeated the Seahawks in Super Bowl 49. He played one season with the New Orleans Saints in 2015.

Browner returned to the Seahawks in 2016 and tried to convert to safety, but was cut before the regular season started.
