New BMW iX3 teaser reveals electric SUV design ahead of launch

BMW will celebrate the world debut of its new all-electric SUV this week.

The new iX3 will be unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show 2018 from April 24th.

Ahead of the launch, the German car manufacturer shared a teaser video for the new SUV saying “Something exciting is coming. Stay tuned for the Auto China Beijing 2018!”

In the video it shows an evolution of BMWs iconic kidney grille – a staple feature on all BMW cars.

Gone are the vertical metal bars in place for a tight hexagonal structure with a gloss black panel laid over of the bottom half.

The grille is also joined in the middle and not split into two separate pieces, something typical of past BMWs.

Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG,announced the arrival of the new iX3 last month.

He said: “Over the course of the year, we will present a number of pure-electric concept vehicles that will all go into series production, like: The first all-electric BMW – the iX3.

“Our new technology flagship, the BMW iNEXT, the captivating BMW i Vision Dynamics, which I just announced in Geneva as the BMW i4.”

Details about the iX3 are scarce but it will likely be a long range EV to take on the likes of the Audi E-Tron Quattro.

It will largely be based on the combustion-engine X3 SUV but will feature some unique design language to ensure distinction between the two models.

Production-ready versions of the SUV are not expected to make their market debut until 2020.

BMW recently trademarked a number of names with the prefix iX – iX1, iX2, iX3, iX4, iX5, iX6, iX7, iX8 and iX9.

This is expected to be the name for its new electric SUV range.

Previously, the carmaker has also revealed a concept model for the X7 iPerformance, a larger hybrid powered SUV.
